Doubles and trebles
Doubles are a great way to improve your balance and prepare for gridwork without needing a lot of experience. If you can easily jump smaller fences (up to 40 cm.), you can jump doubles.
Doubles
Set it up
You will need six wings and six poles for this exercise. Set up two cross-poles two strides apart. Prepare third pair of wings two strides after the first two jumps.
How to ride it
After a good warm up, approach in a punchy canter. Look up and allow with your hands a little bit some strides before the exercise. If you are riding doubles for the first time or haven't done them for a long time, consider approaching in a two-point position. Remember not to fold too much over jumps and remain in a light seat between the jumps.
Too easy?
Make the distance from two strides to one. Also, you can increase the heigh of the fences with a maximum of 60 cm. in an upright.
Now, let's go harder!
Trebles
Set it up
Add another cross-pole at the end of the double, so all fences are set up two strides apart.
How to ride it
Use the same technique as when riding doubles: approach in a punchy canter, look up and don't drop the contact while still allowing a bit more than usually with your hands. Always remember to remain in a light seat while riding through the exercise - this is essential, as if you don't, your horse will not be able to jump the second and third fences.
Too easy?
Try reducing the distance to one stride or making uprights instead of cross-poles with the maximum heigh of 40 cm.
